    A RARE BLACK GURI LACQUER BRUSH AND COVER
    MING DYNASTY, 16TH CENTURY

    The waisted brush is formed with two elongated bulbous sections finely carved with ascending and descending ruyi designs, joined by the mid-section carved as three raised ribs, the tip with a band of conjoined ruyi and the end of the brush with a bud-shaped finial, the tapering cover similarly decorated and surmounted with beaded tip

    The unusual shape of this pen is found on another of very similar design, from the Tokugawa Art Museum, Nagoya, included in the exhibition Carved Lacquer, 1984, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 202.
