    A RARE DEHUA FIGURE OF GUANYIN
    QING DYNASTY, 19TH CENTURY

    The elegant figure of the Guanyin is standing on a base of swirling clouds with a serene expression, her hair elaborately coiffed with a double topknot secured by two ruyi shaped hairpins behind a tiara, reserving two strands of hair falling loosely on the shoulder, holding in her left a ruyi scepter and a basket of fish in her right hand, dressed in long robes embellished with beaded tassels, with a lotus necklace across her chest, the reverse impressed four character seal mark Boji Yuren, virtue extends to all, even fishermen

    Su Xuejin (1869-1919), the most well remembered artists of Dehua kiln, active in the late Qing period. He signed his works with the seal Boji Yuren, there are four figures by this artist with the same seal mark are illustrated by John Ayers in Blanc de Chine, Divine Images in the Porcelain, no. 68-71, p. 117-120, where the author writes about the artist; another is illustrated by S. merchant & Son in their 60th Anniversary Exhibition of Blanc de Chine, December 1985, no. 52, p.29.
