    Compare a mother-of-pearl-inlaid brush in the Tokugawa Art Museum with similar, though more dense inlay, dated to the 16th or 17th century, illustrated in Karamono: Imported Lacquerwork - Chinese, Korean and Ryukyuan (Okinawa), Nagoya, 1997, p. 83, no. 146.
