    TANG DYNASTY (618-907)
    With quadrilobed, rounded sides rising from a ring foot to the flared rim which is interrupted on one side by a spout, the walls of the interior decorated with four flower sprays separated by leaf spandrels, and with a flower sprig in the spout, with a band of overlapping petals at the rim, the exterior with further stylized foliate sprays flanked by butterflies alternating with flower sprigs, all highligted in gilding

    This rare bowl is similar in shape and style of decoration to a gilt-decorated copper pouring bowl illustrated in Chinesisches Gold und Silber: Die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, Museum Rietberg, Zürich, 1994, p. 162, no. 149, which is decorated in the center with a phoenix amidst clouds.
