    A RARE TWO-COLOUR LACQUER HEXAGONAL TRAY
    QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

    The centre of the tray crisply carved through a thick layer of cinnabar lacquer with an outdoor scene of two scholars seated on rocks, engaged in a game of weiqi, watched on by a third scholar standing under a pine tree, with a fourth figure standing nearby on the riverbank hailing a boatman approaching in his sampan through the reed-filled water, the landscape scattered with rocks, shrubs and flowers, with mountains in the background partly shrouded by wispy clouds, the diaper grounds carved from ochre-yellow lacquer, the interior and exterior sides encircled by lotus scrolls, the base with black lacquer
