Teabowls at Sèvres are rare. The form of the present example is known with several variations in decoration but a name for its shape is not identifiable in the factory's records until the 19th century. For an example painted in camaïeu bleu with a hop-trellis pattern, dated 1764, see Christie's, New York, 26 October 2001, lot 139; also Christie's, New York, 21 May 2003, lot 139 for two assembled blue coffee-cups and saucer similarly decorated to the present teabowl, an example of which is also in the David Collection, Copenhagen.
