    Connecticut-born Nathaniel Hayden became a partner of a prominent Charleston jeweler in 1832, and advertised on his own in 1835. This cake basket dates between 1835 and 1843, when the firm was renamed Hayden, Gregg & Co. See: E. Milby Burton, South Carolina Silversmiths, 1991, p. 49.
