    The cylindrical body with everted rim and foliate-cast scroll handle, applied with three foliate and scrollwork roundels depicting Tsarevich Alexander Nikolaevich and Princess Marie of Hesse, later Maria Alexandrovna, Emperor Nicholas I and Alexandra Feodorovna, on a foliate-cast circular foot, marked beneath rim and under foot

    The present lot is one of many such cups and tankards made to commemorate the marriage in 1841 of Tsarevich Alexander Nikolaevich, later Emperor Alexander II, to Princess Marie of Hesse, who took the name Maria Alexandrovna.
