A William Cowell pepper box of similar form is illustrated in Kathryn C. Buhler, American Silver 1655-1825 in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Vol. 1, p. 123, illus. no. 104. This previously unrecorded pepper box is the seventh known example made by William Cowell Sr. The monogram on the base, A/I.M, may be that of John and Mary Avery whose initials appear on a cup made by Cowell, circa 1710.
