    A SUPERB BAMBOO 'LOTUS LEAF' BRUSHWASHER
    QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

    The shallow receptacle finely carved as a large open lotus leaf, the gently undulating rim curling over on one side towards the inside of the vessel, the underside exquisitely carved with a large lotus flower borne on a separate stem, the leaf with ridged veins emanating from the end of the stalk and rising upwards in swirls towards the rim, the interior left undecorated to display the natural golden patina of the bamboo

    This rare example of a lotus washer is stylistically very similar to a bamboo jar in the form of a lotus leaf bearing a Hou Xiaozeng seal and dated to the Ming dynasty, illustrated by H.L. Huang in The Exquisite Art of Bamboo Carving, Taipei, 2007, pp. 236-237.
