In Japan, the standard test for the translucency of green jadeite has been to place it upon a newspaper. If the characters can be read through the piece, then the material is deemed to be the best quality, worthy of collection by the most discerning connoisseur. The demand there for translucency is so strong that depth of colour is often sacrificed for translucency, as these two elements are dramatically opposed in jadeite.
