George Woodall is generally regarded as the premier British cameo glass artist of the period. For a similar example from his daughter Beatrice's collection, see Skinners, Boston, 11 December 2004, lot 5.

By tradition during the 1940's Blitz, the perennial plant depicted on this vase began to grow prolifically on bombed urban sites all over London. This elegant bellflower in the ruff became symbolic of British resilience.
