This very powerful dish is a bolder version of one in the al-Sabah Collection (Oliver Watson, Ceramics from Islamic Lands, London, 2004, cat.U.3, p.451). The present example is stronger in design and is painted in black rather than the underglaze blue found on the Kuwait dish. The leaf forms here also relate closely to those of a blue and white dish in the same collection (Oliver Watson op. cit., no.U.4, p.451). Both those dishes were reputedly from Pir Nakshi, near Dowlatabad in Afghanistan. Please also see the note to the following lot.
