Mme. Recamier was born in Lyons, the daughter of a local notary. She married the wealthy banker Jacques-Rose Recamier and, 'aided by her considerable beauty, her husband's great wealth and a charming and ingratiating character' she became one of the most sought after women in Revolutionary Paris. She was depicted by Chinard in both relief and bust form.
