    A TIXI-LACQUER RECTANGULAR TRAY
    Ming dynasty
    Of elongated rectangular form moulded with indented corners, the interior panel crisply carved through layers of dark brown and red lacquer with two concentric bands of ruyi heads, encircled along the sides with four formal scrolls, repeated to the exterior, all raised on a rectangular foot, some damage to one corner

    This type of tixi lacquer is often referred by the Japanese name guri lacquer. The reference is to the most common designs on these wares, which are scrolling patterns. The word guri refers to pommel scroll, which these designs are thought to resemble.
