The shape is based on early bronze prototypes, such as the middle Western Zhou dynasty hu illustrated by J. Rawson, Western Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, The Arthur M. Sackler Foundation, 1990, p. 75, fig. 95, which is not as elongated as the present jade example, and which also has a cover.

    Provenance

    Gerald Godfrey Collection.
