A WAR OF 1812 ERA SILVER HILTED EAGLE POMMEL SABRE
Isaac Hutton, Albany, New York, circa 1810
The curved blade decorated with gilt panoply-of-arms, jousting knights and florals on a bright blue ground (some minor wear and insignificant spotting). Finely detailed silver eagle pommel hilt with five-ball knuckle bow and five-ball cross guard cartouched HUTTON ALBANY. Ivory grip. Retaining its original decorated leather sheath, all three original silver mounts present. Blade retaining virtually all its original blue and gilt finishes, with some minor staining at tip. Leather sheath broken at one-third its length from throat otherwise retaining much original surface condition. Some minor denting on original silver mounts.
Isaac Hutton, Albany, New York. 1766(7)-1855. Working life circa 1790 through 1817.
With a facsimile copy of an article discussing this sword. In this article is mentioned the donation of the sword to an historical society in 1947 together with a brief history of the Schenck family through which the sword was donated. It would appear that the original owner of this sword was a Lt. Henry Schenck of the 1st. New York Regiment (around 1803). Lt. Schenck was from the area of Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York.
