    Pinto notes: 'apart from paper, spills were made either of flat slivers of wood, or rolls of curled shavings. The flat slivers, or 'spelk' were cut on a spelk plane, the same tool which was used for spelk basket making' (E. Pinto, Treen and other wooden bygones, London, 1969, p. 111 & pl. 116).
