    Muromachi period (14th-15th century)
    One of the Junishinsho, the Twelve Divine Generals serving Bhaishajyaguru (Yakushi Nyorai), the Buddha of healing, dressed in Chinese armor and examining the shaft of an arrow, the bow slung over the left shoulder, standing on a lichen-studded rock base set on a short rectangular plinth; of joined block construction, with extensive red and black pigment and ornamental details in gold of raised dot patterns and of flat diaperwork, the underrobe patterned with gold scrolling foliage, two straps crossing from the back over each shoulder applied metal; later base

    The Twelve Divine Generals represent the twelve vows made by the Medicine Buddha Bhaishajyaguru (Yakushi) to heal the spirits and bodies of all sentient beings. Anila controls the sense of touch and air in the body and is associated with the color red and the zodiac sign dragon, indicated by the dragon head on his headdress.
