Anne Archer was born the daughter of Thomas, 1st Baron Archer of Umberslade. In 1756, she married Edward Turnour Garth-Turnour who, in 1761, was created Baron Winterton of Gort and was subsequently, in 1766, created Viscount Turnour of Gort and Earl Winterton. She died in June 1775 at Shillinglee Park, near Petworth, having had thirteen children.
The present picture, long thought to be by Francis Cotes, is now known to be an excellent version of the portrait of the same size in the Henry E. Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, California. The latter is signed and dated 'A. Ramsay/1762' and bears slight differences from the present picture - such as the absence of earrings.
We are grateful to Professor Alastair Smart for his help in cataloguing this work.
