    AN EXQUISITE JADEITE VASE AND COVER
    LATE QING DYNASTY/REPUBLIC PERIOD, EARLY 20TH CENTURY

    Finely carved as a baluster vase and cover with lion mask handles suspending loose rings, the body flanked by three tall rocky outcrops each surmounted by a Buddhist lion in different postures, with a fourth lion emerging from a grotto near the foot, a beribboned brocade ball positioned above the shoulder of the vase, a fifth and larger lion stands atop the cover, grasping a peony sprig in its jaw, with a larger flowering peony branch behind it, and further flowers springing out of the rockwork to the sides, the pale apple green stone suffused with bright apple and emerald green inclusions, the surface polished to a high sheen
