Lot Essay

H.C. Powell is often referred to as the Beeson of larger gauges; although he did not make many models his work was of the highest possible standard.
The prototype was originally designed by George Whale, following Francis W. Webb's practices, to provide a powerful and reliable express engine, lacking by LNWR at that time. The first batch of ten were built in record time at Crewe works in 1904. Joy valve gear was used replacing the Allen straight link design fitted to Webb's Precedent Class of 2-4-0's. The first of the class, No. 513 'Precursor', proved an immediate success and eventually 120 were built between 1904 and 1907.
Eventually, under C.J. Bower-Cooke, a number were rebuilt as 'George the Fifth' class with superheaters, piston valves and extended smoke boxes, giving considerably greater tractive effort, good fuel economy and similar reliability as the earlier design.
