AN IMPERIAL GILT-DECORATED AND INSCRIBED ‘DRAGON’ INKCAKE
QIANLONG GILT SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
In the form of an open scroll, the inkcake is superbly carved to the centre of the top with two five-clawed dragons picked out in gold and blue, frolicking amidst dense clouds which partially shroud their bodies, flanked on each side with a dense ground of T-shaped archaistic scrolls. The centre of the underside is inscribed in relief with eight characters in seal script reading ‘When clouds billow and rain falls, peace and harmony are bestowed upon all kingdoms’. The right end is incised and gilt with a Qianlong reign mark; the left end with the characters Yangxing dian zhencang, ‘Collection of the Yangxing Hall’. One narrow side of the inkcake is further inscribed and gilt with the characters yu mo, ‘Imperial Inkcake’.
    14 3/4 in. (37.6 cm.) long, box
