A tombak sprinkler of very similar form in the Topkapi Palace shares many decorative features with the present example (Topkapi à Versailles, exhibition catalogue, Paris, 1999, no.109, pp.154-5). The dating is assisted by comparing the decoration to that on a silver ewer also in the Topkapi which is stamped with the tughra of Sultan Ahmed III and can thus be dated to the first quarter of the 18th century. The Topkapi sprinkler also demonstrates that the screw thread fitting inside the mouth was for a very small domed cover.
