The shape and design of these rattles may derive from earlier bronze weights. One such example in the form of a coiled feline dated to the later Han dynasty (25-221 AD) is illustrated in Arts of the Han Dynasty, Chinese Art Society of America, Asia House, New York, February - March 1961, p. 38, no. 58.

    Provenance

Acquired in Hong Kong in 1999.
