The unusual aspect of this censer is attributed to the fact that the cloisonné body, base and feet are dating from the 16th century while the mouth rim and handles, more typical of a 17th century style, were probably added during the early 17th century as it can be seen when looking at the mouth rim.
As a matter of fact, some enamels such as the green and the aubergine are not perfecly even and still 'mixed colours' which is a caracteristic of the 16th century. The pattern itself is identical to the one of a censer and cover, dated from the first half of the 16th century, from the Pierre Uldry Collection, illustrated in H. Brinker and A. Lutz, Chinesisches Cloisonné - Die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, Museum Rietberg, Zurich 1985, pl.44.
