Lots 8, 9, 11, 22-4, 38, and 41-2 are taken from an album of watercolours by (or possibly presented to) Captain Seymour, RN, probably Captain of H.M.S. Vindictive, a fifty gun frigate and flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir Frances Austen, commander of the North America and West Indies Station: 'When Vindictive sailed from England in March 1845, several of her officers made drawings as personal records of the journey, which included visits to Bermuda, Halifax and the West Indies. One man collected over a hundred of these drawings, annotated them, and may have presented them as a souvenir to a senior officer. As none of the pictures is signed, it is difficult to verify the identity of the artists, but it is likely that among them were Lieutenants Austen, Hancock, and Kortright, all of whom had surveying duties.' (J. Adams, Through British Eyes: Images of Bermuda 1815-1860 (exhibition catalogue), New York, 1996, p. 18).
