This painting was acquired from Derby Family descendants of the sitter by the present owner, and according to tradition is a member of the Derby Family. As such, it is probably a copy of an original 18th portrait. The Derby Family were prominent merchants in Salem, Massachusetts, whose most famous patriarch was Elias Hasket Derby.
