CALIFORNIA PAINTINGS FROM THE COLLECTION OF PAIGE RENSE The plein-air artists of California developed a unique style to paint the inspiring beauty of the vast landscape of the Western United States. As Dr. Patricia Trenton writes in her introduction to California Light 1900-1930 (Laguna Art Museum, 1990): "...these artists were inspired by the clarity and force of the distinctive light of Southern California and by the region's endlessly intriguing motives of hill and meadow, desert and mountain, river and ocean." Among the following California paintings from the Collection of Paige Rense are works by a number of artists who were central to forming a movement now known as "California Impressionism." In 1915 the Panama-Pacific International Exposition was held in San Francisco. This historic event--where William Wendt was a regional juror and Donna Schuster won a silver medal--cemented the idea of "American Impressionism" (M. McManus, p. 13) These two artists are represented by Stately Sycamores and California Landscape respectively in this collection. Many of these California artists followed a conventional path at the beginning of their careers, receiving training on the East Coast and then studying in Europe. Others came to California through more diverse routes. For example, Wendt was born in Europe and later moved to California. Alson Skinner Clark attended the Art Institute of Chicago, as well as studied with William Merritt Chase in New York and James A.M. Whistler, Frederick Frieseke, and Guy Rose (a fellow Californian) in France. The laying of the transcontinental railroad also enabled artists to travel and paint throughout the United States. Ultimately, these artists settled in Southern California where the landscape is unlike any other part of the world. Here, depicting the brilliant, distinctive light became their main focus. Each of the artists represented in the Collection of Paige Rense has rendered an aspect of the California region in his or her own style, yet their paintings share a common element: the unique quality of the light and color of California.
