Covers
cover 1877 (12 May) envelope from Lydenburg to England, bearing imperf. 6d. blue cancelled "13" in combination with Griqualand West red overprint Type 3 pair and Type 6 wing-margin strip of six, all clearly cancelled "1" in oval of bars at Cape Town, and showing Lydenburg and Cape Town c.d.s. alongside the adhesives; one stamp of each type creased through having originally been affixed over the edge of the cover, the lower left corner of the envelope cut-away, this almost certainly having been franked with stamps to the value of 2d. Further details
Note: This a most unusual combination cover, the more usual franking being with Cape adhesives. It would seem that a consignment of stamps sold to the Z.A.R. by the Cape P.O. some time during the first months of 1877 contained stamps variously overprinted for use in Griqualand West. Buyers are referred to an article by Alan Drysdall in "The Transvaal Philatelist", February 1993, a copy of which is enclosed with the lot.
