    Joseph Karl Stieler (German, 1781-1858)

Stieler was a painter for the Bavarian court and many of the present portraits were commissioned by King Ludwig I for the Schönheitengalerie, often referred to as the 'Gallery of Beauties', in Schloss Nymphenburg. Additionally, his portrait of Beethoven remains the archetypal image of that famous composer.

See Christie's, New York, 31 October 2000, lot 79 for a set of very similar plates after Stieler.
