Lot Essay

The son and pupil of Gillis van Tilborgh I, the artist may also have studied under David Teniers II. The influence of the latter and of Joos van Craesbeeck is evident in his genre pictures. The present lot is comparable to Van Tilborgh II's Group Portrait: A Wedding Celebration in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
