Amitayus (Wuliangshoufo) is known as the 'Buddha of Infinite Life' and the 'One who grants long life'. As one of the most popular deities from the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon, its typical iconography is recognised by the seated full-lotus posture, dhyanasana, with hands in meditation supporting a vessel known as a kalasha which holds the elixir of immortality. It is often depicted as overflowing to convey the impression of abundance, or containing a sprig from a tree in Sukhavati, the Western Paradise.
Compare this very refine representation of twenty-eight Amitayus to a Qianlong brocade hanging representing the same deity, sold in our New York Rooms, 16 September 1999, lot 160.
