Lot Essay

Freycinet reached the island of Rawak in the east of the Moluccan archipelago in December 1818. The expedition had already had a friendly encounter with the natives from the nearby island of Gebe, exchanging gifts and dining with them on the Uranie, before the islanders rejoined Freycinet in January 1819 on Rawak to bid his expedition farewell. For a description of the encounter with the chief Kimalaha and his warriors from Gebe, see M.S. Rivière (ed.), A Woman of Courage, the Journal of Rose de Freycinet on her Voyage around the World 1817-1820, Canberra, 1996, pp. 63-69.
