Lot Essay

The figure in the centre with his hat under his arm and the soldier at the lower right are copied from Watteau drawings in the Louvre and formerly in the Fauchier-magnan Collection, K.T. Parker and J. Mathey, Antoine Watteau, Catalogue Complet de son oeuvre dessiné, Paris, 1957, I, nos. 42 and 241, both illustrated. The reclining youth at the lower left appears to be a copy after a lost study for the figure at the left corner of the Les Comédians sur le Champ de Foire at Charlottenbourg
