MARIE TNZL VON TRAZBERG
Two albums of botanical watercolous, Bavaria, [c. 1857-1895]. 2 volumes, oblong 8 (169 x 229mm, and smaller). 89 ORIGINAL BOTANICAL WATERCOLOURS, including roses, begonia, daffodil, fuschia and raspberry, many heightened with gum arabic. by Marie Tnzl von Trazberg, each drawing annotated with plant names in pencil. (4 detached.) Non-uniform original cloth bindings (vol. I rebacked).
The albums represent nearly 40 years of meticulous and accomplished study of botany by Marie, one of two such members of the Tnzl (or Tenzel) von Trazberg family. The family, headed by Freiherr von Tenzel, a chamberlain to the royal court of Bavaria, lived at Castle Dieteldorf, during the period covered by the albums. The albums show single flowers, mixed bouquets, sprigs of fruit, and decorative gatherings of roses. The annotations often indicate place of execution, and in the first album, the majority of the watercolours are dated, sometimes giving the day and month in addition to the year. The flowers and fruit depicted include red currant, lily, roses, primula, tulip, fuscia, and pelargonium. The two albums are an important addition to the collection of nine sold in Christie's salerooms in November 1998 (lot 105).
