A GERMAN SILVER-GILT CUP FORMED AS A HUNTING BEAR
MAKER'S MARK OF LEONHARD UMBACH, AUGSBURG, 1585-1590
The seated bear chased with a harness, applied with a pouch containing a dead game bird and holding a wheel-lock holster pistol, the detachable head with ornate collar, the animal's tongue sticking out, marked on collar

An identical bear, perhaps designed originally as a pair to the present example, is in the Märkisches Museum in Berlin and was a gift to the Berlin Senate in 1684 from the senator, Christian Martin Richter.
This present bear is also comparable to one engraved with the arms of Esterhazy in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg and to that in the private collection of Fritz Thyssen, both by Umbach.
Another bear by the same maker is in the Landesmuseum Württemberg in Stuttgart (See J. Hayward, Virtuoso Goldsmiths, London, 1976, p. 386, fig. 155).
It is possible that the present model of a bear is the one recorded in M. Rosenberg, op.cit., vol. I, no. 399 i) (Auktion Bourgeois, Bei Heberle, Cologne, 1904, Katalog 512 Illus).

Lot Essay

Un ours similaire, qui pourrait être le pendant de celui-ci, est exposé au Märkisches Museum de Berlin. Il a été offert au sénat berlinois en 1684 par le sénateur Christian Martin Richter.
Cet ours est également à rapprocher de celui portant les armoiries des Esterhatzy conservé au Germanisches Nationalmuseum de Nuremberg et de celui faisant partie de la collection privée de Fritz Thissen. Un autre ours par le même orfèvre est actuellement au Landesmuseum Württemberg de Stuttgart (Voir J. Hayward, Virtuoso Goldsmiths, Londres, 1976, p. 386, fig. 155).
D'autre part, il s'agirait peut-être de l'ours décrit dans le M. Rosenberg, op.cit., vol. I, no. 399 i) (Auktion Bourgeois, Bei Heberle, Cologne, 1904, Katalog 512 Illus).
