The elephant was the embodiment of strength, wisdom and intelligence. In addition, the white elephant is the animal that is said to have appeared to the historical Buddha's mother in a dream before he was born.
Most of the time represented with vases on their back, they were usually placed each side of a throne.
Compare the similar single cloisonné enamel elephant from the Qianlong period with elaborate stand illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese Enamel Ware in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, pl.29.
See also a pair of white elephants illustrated in Helmut Brinker and Albert Lutz, Chinesisches Cloisonné, Die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, Museum Rietberg 1985, pl.332.
