A LOUIS XV GOLD SNUFF-BOX
MAKER'S MARK OF DANIEL GOVAERS, PARIS, 1734-1735
Oval, chased with swirling flutes imitating a shell, fully marked and signed on the border GOVAERS A PARIS
Daniel Govaers became master in 1717. He achieved success at once and was appointed marchand-orfèvre de leurs Majestés. His name is frequently mentioned in the Registres des Présents du Roi between 1726 and 1736.
This type of shell-shaped box was produced by a number of leading French goldsmiths in the 1730s including Govaers and Sageret. A very similar snuff-box to this example by the same maker, dated 1731 is recorded in a private collection.
