J O Fairlie was born 10 October 1809, died 26 January 1870. A Captain in the 2nd Life Guards and later Lt Col. in the Ayrshire Yeomanry. He and his close friend the Earl of Eglington wrer the dominant and leading figures at Prestwick and would be responsible for the start of the Open Championship. Fairlie was also responsible for Tom Morris going to Prestwick as Greenkeeper
