Lot Essay

A RARE COMPLETE SET of portraits of the prisoners with seven scenes of their captivity whilst being held at Cabul during the first Afghan war. The portraits include Lieutenant Vincent Eyre, Mrs Eyre, Captain Colin MacKenzie, Captain J Conolly, Major E. Pottinger, Shah Shuja Ool Moolk, Mahomed Akbar Khan, and Lady Sale. Not in Abbey.

Captain Robert Salusbury Trevor (1802-1841) of the 3rd Bengal Cavalry was seconded to the army of Shah Shuja's and commanded the Hazirbash (King's Life Guards) Afghanistan in 1841. He was taken hostage and assassinated with the British envoy at a Conference in Kabul 23rd December 1841 by Akbar Khan. Akhbar Khan kept Mrs Trevor & her 7 children captive with the other Cabul Prisoners, the few survivors of the disastrous retreat of the British Army in 1842. After 10 months in captivity they were rescued by the force under Sir James Pollock. Mrs Trevor, her five sons and two daughters survived.
