Lot Essay

In its general aesthetic and composition (but for further hexagons where the present has small stars with raised central bosses) our ceiling is similar to 17th century example in a house in the Muradiyye in Bursa, which Aslanapa refers to as one of the finest examples of wood carving of the Ottoman period (Oktay Aslanapa, Turkish Art and Architecture, London, 1971, pl. 249, p. 331). Another very similar hexagonal ceiling sold at Sotheby's, 9 April 2008, lot 299.
