2° (398 x 274mm). Headings and shoulder notes in red, initials in red and blue after Graily Hewitt. 29 woodcuts by W.H. Hooper and J.B. Swain after Charles and Margaret Gere, two full-page. (Kk1v-Kk2r slightly soiled at upper margin.) Brown calf by W. H. Smith bindery, sides with gilt arms of King's College London, spine gilt lettered, gilt-ruled turn-ins (slight stain to one spine compartment). Provenance: W.F.D. Smith, 2nd Viscount Hambleden (1868-1928, presentation label from King's College, London, December 1919, on front pastedown) -- William Henry Smith, 3rd Viscount Hambleden (1903-1948, bookplate).

LIMITED TO 153 COPIES, this one of 145 on paper, the text based on Southey's reprint of Caxton's 1485 edition. This association copy, presented to the 2nd Viscount Hambleden by King's College, is an indication of his benevolent realtionship with institutions in the vicinity of W.H. Smith's headquarters. 'He joined the council of King's College, London, in 1894, becoming a governor in 1898, treasurer from 1898 to 1928, and fellow in 1907. When W. H. Smith & Son bought the land at Clare Market occupied by King's College Hospital, [he] selected and donated a new site for the hospital at Denmark Hill' (ODNB). Hornby XXVI.
