TWO BRONZE MIRRORS, HAN DYNASTY (206BC-220AD) AND TANG DYNASTY (618-906)
comprising a Han Dynasty circular astronomical mirror of blackened bronze, set to the centre with a sunken octofoil, with rope pattern borders flanking a band of archaic characters, the inscription partially read as 'like the sun like the moon alternations of light and shade (gradually, imperceptibly) like clear like -- like clear and evident like bright like shining like -- disappearing', stand; and a Tang Dynasty mirror, decorated with a band of raised scrolls and bosses, the central knop inscribed 'Made by Hsieh Te-Ch'uan', the reverse previously polished to a warm gold tone, stand -- the Han mirror, 4 7/8in. (12.5cm.) diam. (2)
Provenance
Plesch collection; Bf 13 acquired from Sidney Moss, London, June 1961 and Bf 10 acquired by the father of the present owner in Vienna in 1920s and then inherited in 1957.
