Lot Essay

Twelve scenes from The Tale of Genji are laid out in rough chronological order from right to left on this pair of screens. The right screen includes scenes from Chapter 3, The Shell of the Locust, Chapter 5, Lavender, Chapter 9, Heartvine, and Chapter 32, A Branch of Plum, among others. On the left screen are scenes from Chapter 26, Wild Carnations, and Chapter 28, The Typhoon.
