Lot Essay

The present picture is sold with a copy of a certificate from Dr. Maria Teresa Cantaro. In the certificate Dr Cantaro attributes the picture to Lavinia Fontana and identifies the sitters as Eleonora de' Medici, Duchess of Mantua (1567-1611) and her son Francesco IV (1586-1612). She dates the picture to c. 1591 given the age of the child. She notes that they were painted several times by Frans Pourbus II, Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Jacopo da Empoli as well as several anonymous painters.
