Castro was of Portuguese descent, but it is thought that he lived and had his early training in Antwerp. He was probably the son of the marine painter Sebastian D. Castro, and it is evident that Lorenzo was also acquainted with Mediterranean ports such as Genoa, Malta and Lisbon. Later, he would settle in England, at least between 1672 and 1686, where many of his known works were commissioned. His earliest signed and dated work of 1672, an imagined view of the Battle of Actium, is now at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. There are also several works by Lorenzo A. Castro in the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
