Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mag. Michael Schweller and Dr. Arthur Stögmann of the Collections of the Princeley House of Liechtenstein for confirming that the red wax seals on the reverse are those of the Collections and pointing out the 1805 reference, and to Jan van Helmont for suggesting that the arms on the signet ring may be the three golden lillies on a field of sinople of the influential family of Van Westervelt, Lord-Mayors of Harderwijk and Hattem in the Eastern Netherlands. The signet ring appears to bear the remains of two initials above the arms, which may once have provided a further clue to the identity of the sitter. Mr. van Helmont has also suggested that the arms on the black seal on the reverse may bear the arms of either Aalbersberg or Tetrode.
