With period Rolex Geneva Swimpruf Oyster tag, Rolex Oyster Guaranteed 100 metres/330ft. under water anchor and cord, The Submariner Rolex Oyster Perpetual brochure dated 1958, The Roley Oyster Perpetual Submariner 100 card and presentation box.
Reference 6536, one of the earliest and rarest Submariner ever, was introduced in 1955 and remained in production during just one year, the models featuring five digits serial numbers. The rarest variant within this already exceedingly rare model however is the one with red depth printing, as the present example. It can safely be assumed that Rolex tested a rating indication in red without mentioning feet or meters before finally settling on the white "100m=330ft" found on later models.
A highlight for the connoisseur of rare timepieces, this Submariner is furthermore preserved in extremely appealing original overall condition, featuring the case back with crossed-out reference 6538, new number 6536 written at a different position, black gloss dial with gilt printing, gold hands and designation “Swiss”, the crown with the cross symbol surmounted by the Rolex logo, the bezel with silvered triangle and the correct bracelet dating from 1956.
Its black lacquer dial shows an incredibly charismatic grainy patina which has formed naturally over the years, most probably due to various atmospheric influences and sunlight. The attractively discoloured luminous material to numerals and hands display a fascinating sand tone with the 6 o'clock hour marker showing a lighter tone, a particularity often seen on early Rolex sports watches. The case, never exposed to careless polishing, impresses any beholder with its full body and well-defined facets of the lugs.
