Accompanied by an associated 14k pink gold chain. Further accompanied by a Ulysse Nardin Extract from the Archives confirming the present watch was produced in Ulysse Nardin Workshops in 1928 and sold to Bigalke & Eckert Co. in New York in the same year. Furthermore accompanied by three photographs of Mr. Paul Wooton with President Roosevelt, circa 1943, Mr. Paul Wooton with Prime Minister Winston Churchill, circa 1952, and of Mr. Paul Wooton with Queen Elizabeth, circa 1957.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Mr. Paul Wooton
Mr. Paul Wooton was an accomplished and successful American newspaper correspondent in the early to mid-20th century. He joined the staff of the New Orleans Times-Picayune in 1911 and became the newspaper’s Washington correspondent in 1914. Wooton served as president of the White House Correspondents' Association in 1943-1944 and president of the National Press Club in 1946.
A well-liked friend and colleague to many important figures of the time, he was particularly admired by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his exemplary work in the press, as we can see clearly on the present watch the following inscription;
Presented to Paul Wooton by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, On Behalf of the Associated Business Papers, In Appreciation of His Outstanding Service to the Business Press in Time of War, June 11, 1943.
The present watch has been extremely well preserved for many years, in the possession of the family of Mr. Edgar Allen Poe, a close colleague of Mr. Wooton. The two men worked together delivering important political news stories at an incredibly significant time in American history. President Roosevelt and Mr. Wooton attended many functions together, such as the White House Correspondents' Dinner in 1943 (pictured). This is the very same year that President Roosevelt presented the pocket watch to Mr. Wooton at the White House.
During the peak of Mr. Wooton's career, he was associated with other many highly respected figures of the time. Noteworthy associated figures include Winston Churchill and Queen Elizabeth, both shown with Mr. Wooton in the photographs that accompany the present watch.
